A city in the Lazio Region of

with a population of approximately 40,000 people.
When it was a Roman
outpost its name was Casinum and was the larder of the
Roman Empire
.
Many Roman ruins can be found such as the Roman Amphiteater of Ummidia Quadratilla.
When St. Benedict built the great monastary in 529 AD above Casinum, its name was changed to San Germano.
After the unification of
Italy
in 1870, the city was renamed
Cassino
.
During WWII Cassino was entirely destroyed as Allies as they
attempted to oust the Germans who had occupied the mountain near the
Montecassino, above the city. Cassino was totally rebuilt after WWII and now has a major university with a respected engineering school,
has modern cafe`s, shops with top fashions and quality Italian designs, and great restaurants.
Cassino
is also a center for marble production, especially the Coreno marble.

is located 1.5 hours from
Rome
, 1.5 hours fromPompeii/Naples, and 30 minutes from the
Tyhrrenian
Coast
, aka the Riviera of Ulysses,
and 2 hours from the Amalfi Coast.
