What is a Sister City?

A Sister City relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between communities in different countries. Activities include a wide range of cultural, economic and personal enrichment opportunities. Friendship cities are less formal with a more limited scope of activities. Mazatlán, Mexico 1961

Nestled on Mexico's Pacific coast, Mazatlán is a city steeped in a rich tapestry of history and culture. Rooted in indigenous settlements dating back over 2,500 years, its colonial past is evident in the well-preserved architecture of the historic center, once a crucial Spanish seaport. Hamm, Germany 1969

Hamm's roots trace back centuries, and its historical landmarks stand as testaments to the city's enduring legacy. The imposing Hamm Castle, with its medieval charm, and the graceful St. Paul's Church are just a few of Hamm’s architectural treasures. Fujinomiya, Japan 1975

Fujinomiya is located about 75 miles southwest of Tokyo and is in a large forest with mountain spring water creating beautiful falls. In addition to the world-reknowned Mt. Fuji, there are many places to enjoy, such as the Art Museum, the five-story pagoda at Taiseki-ji, and the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine. Kizugawa, Japan 1999

(Friendship City)

Since 1999, the former Kizu town and now Kizugawa city have sent almost 150 junior-high school students to Santa Monica to experience American culture. The aim of this program is to give the next generation of Kizugawa’s children an opportunity to contribute towards a more international society and also to deepen the friendship between the cities of Santa Monica and Kizugawa. Brighton & Hove, England 2023

Brighton & Hove, two vibrant coastal cities in England, are celebrated for their artistic culture, historic charm, and iconic seafront. As Santa Monica’s newest sister city, Brighton & Hove shares a unique connection through their historic piers—Santa Monica Pier and Brighton Palace Pier—both beloved landmarks that symbolize the character and heritage of their respective communities. Known for its bohemian spirit and creative energy, Brighton & Hove offers visitors a mix of classic British seaside attractions and contemporary culture, from its bustling Lanes to the futuristic i360 observation tower.
